Committee Minutes
Monday, April 15, 2019; 3:30 p.m. at City Hall
Members present: Chair Lucarelli and city staff Brandy Rinearson, Bill Thiele, and Jenine Floyd. Guests
present: Bobbie Stewart, POBSA; and Kathleen Wilson, POBSA.
Advertising
City staff Rinearson said in past years, we have been contacted by the Tacoma News Tribune asking if
we want to advertise the event with them. Also, last year, we were contacted by a radio station asking
the same. After a brief discussion, Chair Lucarelli said advertising dollars are best spent closer to the
event and informing the public of the tree contest sponsors.
The committee and guests discussed various locations that brochures could be distributed including
Gig Harbor, Belfair, and the foot ferry.
2019 Theme
Chair Lucarelli provided several theme ideas to the committee. The committee and guests discussed
the options and agreed on Christmas by the Bay.
Tree Decorating Contest
Staff Thiele mentioned there may be one less planter near Frederick this year, but he still needs to
verify.
Staff Rinearson said she is working on the resolution which approves collecting funds for the tree
contest. She still needs to get together with Finance and then it will go before Council for adoption.
In response to Ms. Wilson, Chair Lucarelli explained we are giving previous sponsors the opportunity to
reserve prior to September 9th and the contest will be open to the public September 9th. Downtown
merchants who did not have a planter last year can also reserve prior to September 9th.
The committee and guests talked about distributing the tree decorating contest flyer and
application/reservation form; changing the start date of decorating the trees from November 11th to
November 9th; lights are required to be LED; decorations to be provided by the applicant; applicants
may need a short extension cord; tree judging categories are 1) Best Vintage Tree 2) Most Creative
Tree and 3) Best Business Representation Tree; POBSA will have a ‘People’s Choice’ tree; and where to
include disclaimer language regarding no vulgar or offensive decorations.
2019 Chimes & Lights Event
Staff Thiele said the big tree arrives the week before Thanksgiving and briefly explained how we
receive the tree and spoke about last year’s tree. He would like to find someone with equipment
designed to haul trees to take the tree to City Hall.

Chair Lucarelli said we could ask advice from one of the local tree places.
The committee and guests discussed ideas on how to bring more people to the Santa picture location,
as there is not enough lights or activities to draw people to the area.
The committee and guests continued discussion on choirs; the movie theatre; and activities at the
library.
There being no further business, Chair Lucarelli adjourned the meeting at 4:10 p.m. Audio-only
recording was successful.
