A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF PORT
ORCHARD, WASHINGTON ADOPTING THE REVISED JOB
DESCRIPTION FOR THE CUSTODIAN MAINTENANCE
WORKER
WHEREAS, it is necessary for the city to periodically review the duties and responsibilities
of all employment positions, and
WHEREAS, the position of the Custodian Maintenance Worker has been reviewed and
based upon the proposed job duties it is determined that it is appropriate to revise the
Custodian Maintenance Worker; now , therefore,
THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PORT ORCHARD, WASHINGTON,
HEREBY RESOLVES AS FOLLOWS:
THAT: the attached job description is provided for the revised job
description of the Custodian Maintenance Worker.
THAT: no salary step increase is subject to change upon this revision.

JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Title: Custodian -Maintenance Worker
FLSA: Non-Exempt
Civil Service: Exempt
Department: Public Works
Reports To: Public Works Supervisor
This is a full-time position. It is not anticipated that the Custodian -Maintenance Worker will be required
to attend meetings other than normal work hours; however, the employee may be called back to work
before or after regularly scheduled work hours or on scheduled days off.
Major Function and Purpose
The Custodian -Maintenance Worker Employee is able to participate in the routine cleaning, maintenance
and repairs ofthe City's Facilities.
General Function
Employees assigned to this job classification are responsible for the efficient and effective use of
equipment, materials and personnel (as coordinated with the Community Service Program) to complete
cleaning, maintenance and repairs to the City's Facilities (City Hall, Public Works Shop, South Shed and
Active Club) in a timely and cost-effective manner. Work is performed under the direction of the Public
Works Supervisor.

This job description reflects general details as necessary to describe the principal functions of this job, the
level of knowledge and skill typically required, and the scope of responsibility, but should not be

including working in other function areas to cover absences or relief, to equalize peak work periods, or to
otherwise balance the work load. Specific duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
• Custodial Services -See "Scope of Work -Attachment A" for weekly, monthly and yearly
duties and responsibilities.

maintenance and repair activities for all City facilities as identified above.
• Ordering of all necessary supplies.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
While requirements may be representative of minimum levels of knowledge, skills and abilities, to perform
this job successfully, the incumbent will possess the abilities or aptitudes to perform each duty proficiently.
• Demonstrated knowledge of the methods, procedures and equipment used in the cleaning, repair and
maintenance of City's facilities.
• Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions applicable to public works projects.
• Abilityto:
• maintain records and prepare work reports
• skilled operation of a variety of light equipment, including, manual and power hand tools, and
other tools and equipment appropriate to a given duty responsibility
• Understand and follow oral and written instructions
• comprehend technical instructions and repair manuals

Working Conditions
Work is performed indoors and outdoors. Employee may need to work in confined spaces and will be
required to work on ladders, inclines, and in noisy work areas. He/she may be exposed to extremes in
temperature, chemicals, or noxious fumes. Employee may be required to wear protective clothing or
equipment in the performance of duties.
Work schedule: Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 8:00AM to 6:30 PM
Physical Requirements
The Custodian -Maintenance Worker Employee must have the overall stamina and ability to perform
moderate to strenuous physical activity, including the ability to stand or walk for long periods of time,
traversing rough terrain, working in or over water, working at heights or on scaffolding, and lifting or
carrying up to 50 pounds. Job requirements may include the ability to climb up to 20 feet off the ground;
bend and/or work in tight or confined areas. The incumbent must be able to hear alarms and have the
ability to audibly identify the presence of a danger or hazard.
Recruiting Requirements
• Valid Washington State driver's license
• High school diploma
• All city employees must successfully pass pre-employment Drug and Alcohol Testing as prescribed by
the City's Drug and Alcohol Testing Policy.
Experience and Training
One year in a construction or maintenance field.
Graduation from an accredited high school.
Must possess a valid Washington State Driver's license, first aid/CPR card, or have the ability to obtain
within 3 months.
