RE: Committee Minutes
The Finance Committee met for a breakfast meeting at Myhre's on 20
November 1995. Members present were Bob Geiger and Don Morrison.
John Clauson was absent. Representing the Port of Bremerton were
Commissioner Feek, Jay Holmann and Ken Attebury. Also present was
Larry Curles.
The Committee and the Port discussed potential joint projects in
the downtown area. The former Texaco gas station and possibly the
Vlist car dealership property may be available for purchase by the
Port. The property is assessed at about $450,000, but may be
appraised for about $1,000,000.
The Port considered the following:
1. Is it appropriate for the Port to purchase this property
and then develop it?
2. Potential development ideas could be dry storage for
boats or retail with Port offices above it. Boat storage
was later discounted. Also discussed were apartments.
3. The deep water has the potential for water dependent uses
for tourism and/or boat sales.
The City considered the following:
1. If the City owns the land, it can better guide its
ultimate development.
2. The property generates sales and property tax at this
time. Acquisition by a government entity would take it
off the tax rolls.
3. The half moon beach has potential for public access
development. This would be consistent with the Kasprisin
Plan.
The Committee recommends the following:
1. An executive session be scheduled for 27 November to
discuss real estate transactions.
Cr
2. The City Attorney review the laws about the City
investing and developing property.
