06/20/1996 - MinutesGrowth Management/Planning Committee
Minutes of June 20, 1996
The meeting was convened at 7:30 am in the City Hall Council Chambers. City Council
members Geiger, Powers, and Van Zee were present as was City Planner Gross.
Representatives from the following organizations were also present: Chamber of Commerce,
Soroptimist International of Port Orchard, Masonic Lodge, Order of the Eastern Star, and the
Port Orchard Kiwanis. Additionally, a letter was received from the Port Orchard Business and
Professional Women's Club.
The Committee discussed several alternatives for a reworking of the existing signage to allow
additional emblems on the Welcome Sign. All organizations except the Kiwanis were opposed
to the idea of a $25 annual maintenance fee. One new idea discussed was the possibility that
a phone service could be installed at the Chamber of Commerce which contained detailed
information about each organization. Separate "voice -mail boxes" could potentially be provided
for each group on the sign. The organizations would pay for this service. It was decided that
additional information was needed including the cost of this service and the Chamber's opinion
of this possibility. Another option would be to have one dedicated phone line with a long
continuous message listing all organizations and information. This would be similar to the
movie theater message. This also needs research.
The Business and Professional Women's Club and all organizations present, except the Masons,
are in favor of simply removing the date and time location placards to allow additional emblems
to be placed on the sign. This was discussed as the least costly change which would allow new
emblems to be displayed. The Masons do not want their placards removed. It was suggested
as a possibility that the Order of the Eastern Star might help to pay for the moving of the sign
if the entire panels were raised in order to allow an additional panel (for the new emblems) with
no change to the existing signage.
The idea of adding lighting to the sign was also discussed. This also needs additional
information. Councilmember Van Zee stated he would research the answering machine
possibilities with US West and the lighting possibilities with Puget Power. (US West will send
information which includes cost breakouts, Puget Power will be contacted.)
Councilman Geiger suggested that the Chamber of Commerce should be the manager of the sign.
Councilwoman Powers suggested that after all information is gathered another letter should be
sent out to all organizations. The Committee and all members present decided that they would
have another meeting once the information was gathered.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:15 am.
