A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF PORT ORCHARD,
WASHINGTON SUPPORTING AFFIRMATIVE ACTION.
WHEREAS, Initiative Measure 200 will be on the State ballot in an attempt to
eliminate affirmative action policies and programs throughout the State of Washington; and
WHEREAS, affirmative action is a positive program which has been successful in
providing equal opportunity, remedying discrimination, and including more women and minorities in all
professionals and trades; and
WHEREAS, the continuance of affirmative action is essential to maintain a diversity
throughout the work force and to assure future generations equal opportunity to fulfill individual potential;
WHEREAS, the elimination of affirmative action will be detrimental to our local
economy and to our citizens; now therefore,
THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PORT ORCHARD, WASHINGTON DOES
HEREBY RESOLVE THAT:
The City of Port Orchard opposes Initiative Measure 200 and continues strongly to
support affirmative action throughout the work force. Our economy, our community, and our nation is
strengthened by the collective skills of our citizens and no discriminatory barriers should limit a person's
effort to fulfill is or her potential.
PASSED by the City Council of the City of Port Orchard, SIGNED by the Mayor and
attested by the Clerk in authentication of such passage this 28th day of September, 1998.
