A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF PORT ORCHARD,
WASHINGTON SUPPORTING THE CROSS -SOUND FLYER
PASSENGER ONLY FERRY
WHEREAS, it is in the general public interest to support efficient
and effective transportation systems, which will reduce increased traffic and
associated environmental and financial impacts of auto travel, and
WHEREAS, the population of Kitsap County is growing rapidly and
many Kitsap County residents commute to Seattle via the ferry system or by
driving around Puget Sound, and
WHEREAS, providing passenger ferry service from Port Orchard,
Bremerton and Suquamish direct to Seattle would reduce vehicle usage and commute
time for many Kitsap County residents, and
WHEREAS, it is perceived that development of a privately operated
passenger ferry will have a insignificant financial impact on the state funded
ferries while reducing the need for increased taxpayer support to the public
transportation system, and
WHEREAS, Hilton Smith has proposed establishing a privately funded
passenger ferry service across Puget Sound, and
WHEREAS, Hilton Smith has experience in the maritime business
through operation of four separate water transit enterprises, and
WHEREAS, the proposed Cross Sound Flyer Passenger Ferry would
provide an viable, privately financed, customer -responsive service.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the Port Orchard City Council
that:
The City of Port Orchard does support Hilton Smith's proposal to
provide a private cross sound ferry system and encourages the Utilities and
Transportation Commission members to approve the application for the Cross Sound
Flyer Passenger Ferry Service with routes between Seattle, Port Orchard,
Bremerton and Suquamish.
PASSED by the City Council of the City of Port Orchard, APPROVED
by the Mayor and attested by the Clerk in authent' ation of such passage this
11th day of March, 1996.
