1704 - Resolution - U.S.S. MissouriRESOLUTION NO. 1704 A R€SOLUTION OF THE CITY OF PORT ORCHARD, WASHINGTON SUPPORTING THE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT COUNCIL OF KITSAP COUNTY WITH THE CAMPAIGN TO KEEP THE U.S.S. MISSOURI IN KITSAP COUNTY, SPECIFICALLY ON THE BREMERTON WATERFRONT. WHEREAS, the U.S.S. Missouri is an historic maritime battleship having hosted the site of the Surrender by the Japanese to the Allied forces, September 2, 1945; WHEREAS, the U.S.S. Missouri has become an integral part of the Bremerton and Kitsap communities during its many years moored in the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard; WHEREAS, thousands of the people of Bremerton and Kitsap County either served aboard the U.S.S. Missouri or worked aboard the ship during maintenance and repair, in both wartime and peacetime; WHEREAS, the U.S.S. Missouri has become a major tourist attraction in Bremerton and stands as a proud symbol of this community's role in world-wide peacekeeping efforts; WHEREAS, the U.S.S. Missouri has now been put on the inactive roles by the Department of Defense with the ultimate goal of relocating the ship from the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard to a community that will embrace its national historic value for transformation into an historic museum; WHEREAS, local community efforts are now being coordinated to secure the future of the U.S.S. Missouri on Bremerton's waterfront; WHEREAS, the Economic Development Council is the leading agency in Kitsap County for fostering economic development; NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PORT ORCHARD DOES HEREBY support both the campaign to keep the U.S.S. Missouri in Bremerton and the location of the ship on the downtown Bremerton waterfront or adjacent properties assuring it as part of the waterfront redevelopment project. PASSED by the City Council of the City of Port Orchard, APPROVED by the Mayor and attested by the Clerk in authentication of such passage this 14th day of August, 1995. LESLIE J.
