04/29/2020 - City Funds New Affordable Housing Program through Kitsap Community ResourcesCity Funds New Affordable Housing Program through Kitsap Community Resources Posted on April 29, 2020 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Mayor’s Office April 29, 2020 (360) 876-4407 PORT ORCHARD, WA – The City of Port Orchard city council this week activated a new funding program to support affordable housing in the community. The program is designed to ensure more residents have a safe place to live . The city council approved the measure in 2019 on the heels of a proclamation signed by Governor Inslee under Substitute House Bill 1406 that credits a percentage of state sales tax back to the city to fund affordable housing initiatives. Initial funding for the new program became available this month. The city is coordinating the program through Kitsap Community Resources (KCR) that assists low income residents through its Housing Solutions Center. Individuals and families whose income is at or below 60% of median income may qualify for support. Mayor Rob Putaansuu anticipates that nearly $30,000 will be generated per year to assist with housing options, rent and other household payments. “Timing could not be better for this new program to come to fruition,” Putaansuu said. “The Covid-19 pandemic has caused hardship for so many. We encourage those in need to reach out to KCR to learn about options available to them.” Kitsap Community Resources is an agency dedicated to creating hope and opportunity to low-income Kitsap County families by providing resources that promote self-sufficiency and stability.
