A RESOLUTION of the City of Fort Orchard, petitioning the United States
Senators and Members of Congress from the State of Washington, that the
ACE 3, being constructed at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, be named the
U.S.S. PORT ORCHARD.
ivq-iEREAS, the City of Port Orchard (formerly Sidney), Washington is the oldest
incorporated municipality in Kitsap County, having been incorporated in September,
1890, and is its County Seat; and
WHEREAS, at the time the Navy Department was searching for a suitable site
for a second naval establishment on the Pacific Coast in the Puget Sound area,
the residents of Port Orchard spent considerable time with the Navy Commission and
convinced them that it should be located in Port Orchard Bay; and
WHEREAS, all of the lumber for the construction of the original drydocks in
Puget Sound Naval Shipyard was cut in Port Orchard; and
WHEREAS, the citizens of Port Orchard always have been extremely devoted and
loyal to the U. S. Navy, starting with 21 gun salutes fired from a cannon on
Prospect Point in 1892 and Continuing on through active support of such programs
as the Navy League of the United "States, the Naval Base Association, and an annual
South Kitsap Chamber of Commerce salmon barbeque at Hood Canal for officers and
men from ships in the Navy Yard;
NOW, THEREFORE, be it Resolved that the United States Senators and Members of
Congress from the State of Washington be urged and petitioned to lend their support
toward the naming of the AOE 3, being constructed at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard,
the U.S.S. PORT ORCHARD .
