009-06 - Resolution - Supporting South Kitsap Fire and Rescue Temporary LevyRESOLUTION NO. 009-06 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF PORT ORCHARD, WASHINGTON, SUPPORTING THE SOUTH KITSAP FIRE AND RESCUE TEMPORARY LEVY LID LIFT ELECTION. WHEREAS, the elected Fire Commissioners for South Kitsap Fire and Rescue have placed a temporary levy lid lift ballot issue on May 16, 2006; and WHEREAS, approving this measure will help the district meet increased demand for service from our rapidly growing community. This measure will add nine Firefighter/Emergency Medical Technicians. Additional staffing is needed to maintain and improve emergency response times and make sure emergency services are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week-even if there are multiple calls; and WHEREAS, passing this measure now will allow the District to qualify for a federal grant to help hire nine additional Firefighter/EMT's who perform Basic Life Support services, fire and rescue responses, and will allow SKFR to place an additional emergency response crew into service 24/7. This will allow the District to staff an unmanned station at 6258 Bethel Road SE which sits in the center of their service area; and WHEREAS, this measure authorizes a temporary increase in the levy rate for fire and emergency medical services by increasing the amount the district levies in property taxes by $.14 per $1000 valuation for six years. The levy would expire in 2013; and WHEREAS, the additional staffing created by the temporary lid lift and the additional federal funds that the District will qualify for will improve and reduce emergency response times to South Kitsap and the citizens of Port Orchard; now therefore THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PORT ORCHARD, WASHINGTON RESOLVES AS FOLLOWS: THAT: The City of Port Orchard supports the South Kitsap Fire and Rescue Temporary Levy Lid Lift and urges Kitsap County voters to approve the ballot measure on May 16, 2006.
