A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF PORT ORCHARD,
WASHINGTON, APPROVING THE BETHEL ROUNDABOUT
BEING NAMED IN HONOR OF NIELS NIELSEN
WHEREAS, Niels G. Nielsen was the consummate Rotarian; and as such a fine
and upstanding leader in Port Orchard and its surrounding communities. Through
Rotaty Niels was actively involved in both local and international service projects. He
was a humanitarian who exemplified the Rotary's motto of "service above self', and
embraced the idea of building goodwill and better friendships locally and around the
world;" and
WHEREAS, Niels was a longtime resident of P01t Orchard, a local businessman,
a father, a grandfather and one of Port Orchard Rotaty club's earliest members.
Through the many years of his membership he could be found tirelessly participating at
evety food drive for the needy, evety beautification project in and outside the city and
evety fundraiser that the club undertook for the good of its community; and
WHEREAS, the P01t Orchard Rotaty club funded, designed, implemented and
helps to maintain the beautifully landscaped roundabout located at the intersection of
Mile Hill Drive and Bethel Road. Member volunteers regularly plant flowers, raise and
lower the flags as appropriate, and decorate the roundabout seasonally as well as
maintain its impressive water feature; and
WHEREAS, members of the club are requesting that the City of Port Orchard
rename the roundabout in honor of Niels Nielsen; and
WHEREAS, the City Council has reserved to itself the authority to designate the
names of public parks, public facilities, and streets based upon cettain criteria, including
but not limited to an individual (living or deceased) who has made a significant
contribution to the community; now, therefore,

THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PORT ORCHARD, WASHINGTON,
HEREBY RESOLVES AS FOLLOWS:
THAT: the roundabout located at the intersection of Bethel Road
and Mile Hill Drive known generally as the Bethel Roundabout is
hereby renamed the Niels Nielsen Roundabout.
FURTHER THAT: the Port Orchard Rotary Club may place no
more than three (3) 6" x 18" plaques on the face of the roundabout
identifying the name change, conditioned upon the Pmt Orchard
Rotary Club continuing its maintenance of the landscaped areas,
water features, and flag pole.
PASSED by the City Council of the City of Port Orchard, SIGNED by the Mayor and
attested by the Clerk in authentication of such passage this 22nd day of February 2011.
