A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF PORT ORCHARD,
WASHINGTON REAFFIRMING THE CITY'S SUPPORT TO
KEEP THE USS MISSOURI ON THE MAINLAND OF THE
CONTIGUOUS UNITED STATES.
WHEREAS, the Battleship USS Missouri, (BB63) is the solitary identifiable symbol
of the end of World War II, for the multitudes of servicemen and women, who served during that
period and the millions of home front defense workers; and
WHEREAS, this intrinsic historical vessel is presently moored on the mainland of
the contiguous state of the union, where the majority of veterans and home front defense
workers and their descendants reside, affording them the opportunity to visit and to perpetuate
the significance of the events conducted aboard this vessel, ending the most important event of
the 20th century; and
WHEREAS, more citizens of this country will be able to view this national
treasurer, especially the youth, the future leaders of this republic of the immense purchase price
of freedom for all mankind,
WHEREAS, the Missouri on the Mainland Committee (MOM) has been duly
organized and proposes that the Battleship USS Missouri (BB63) be moored at a suitable
location on the mainland to provide accessibility for the American public to savor a taste of
Freedom and their heritage, now, therefore,
THE CITY OF PORT ORCHARD CITY COUNCIL DOES RESOLVE AS
FOLLOWS:
THAT we support the action and proposal of Missouri on the Mainland (MOM)
Committee to permanently moore the Missouri on the mainland.
PASSED by the City Council of the City of Port Orchard, APPROVED by the
Mayor and attested by the Clerk in authentication of such passage this 27th day of May, 1997.
